Is your MAC secure?

Mac users have been given a warning over the discovery of a malicious fake antivirus scam.

Security specialist Intego made those running Apple's OSX aware of a piece of malware known as Mac Defender.

Users are targeted using black hat search engine optimisation attacks, where exploits are used to boost the rankings of malicious links.

Once these are followed, a mocked up malware scan appears, with a JavaScript program set to automatically download a compressed ZIP file.

This installs the malware, which will then run every time the user launches their device.

Intego highlighted the believability of this malicious product, noting that it is devoid of clumsy mistakes that characterise similar programs aimed at machines running Windows.

"This application is very well designed and looks professional. There are a number of different screens and the grammar and spelling are correct," said the company.

A Geekosystem article on the program warned that the notion Macs are immune to malware and viruses is a myth.
